Assume you're using the "kit" type wrench ?
Get your self a "decent" glow plug wrench, EDS, HUDY etc etc, you wont strip one of those and you can get some serious leverage on them with out fear of...

Short helps "top end"
Short pipe = top end
Long pipe = bottom end
