The third round of the UKTruggyPro series took place at the excellent Clanfield Off-Road RC Track and with a new big jump, it’s provided the perfect Truggy stomping ground. Most of the top drivers were in attendance although with the Euro B’s on in France, current championship leader Darren Bloomfield would miss this round along with a few other drivers.
Simon Willets took the top qualifying spot with his Losi 8ight-T after the three rounds with Jon Hazlewood driving an Xray XT8 just 0.057 seconds behind him and Tommy Chung driving a Kyosho ST-RR one second down on Jon.
In the 30 minute A final, a small nudge between Jon and Tommy on corner three gave Simon a chance to get away. Tommy recovered well to stay on Simon’s trail but Jon had a string of bad luck as he got tangled up with the rest of the pack coming through leaving him in second to last place. He pushed the XT8 to the limit to make up positions and worked his way up to sixth place by lap seven. In front of him, Jamie Booth, driving the new Hong Nor X2 CRT was having a great tussle for third with Mike Craddock, driving a Kyosho ST-RR and Sam Taylor running the Mugen MBX5-T. Hazlewood entered into this foray and with some top driving and a ten minute fuel stop strategy, eventually got past them all on lap 22. Just two laps later he took Tommy for second place and set his sights on first place. Unfortunately Tommy lost a wheel on lap 32 putting him out of the race.
Hazlewood showed some great skill to catch up with Simon in first place, these two fought valiantly for the last ten laps. Hazlewood took the lead on lap 39 but there was nothing in it with the two of them were virtually wheel to wheel and when the inevitable tangles happened, great sportsmanship was shown when they each stopped to let the other catch up. This excellent example continued right to the last corners and when Simon took a tumble on the final hairpin, Jon waited but then took a cleaner line over the quad jump to pick up the overall win. Jamie Booth had held Craddock and Taylor at bay to claim third.
Another excellent round of the truggy nationals and with Tony and Sarah form the Clanfield track running a slick schedule all day, we ploughed through three rounds of qualifying and even had time for 15 minutes final for all and the 30 minute A final.
