Answer RC Winter Series Round 6 @ Deerdale Park

Well I decided after the amount of fun had at round 5, despite the DNF, I just had to enter round 6 for some more fun.

Talk about engine problems!!! In heat 1, just as the race started after the 4 min warm up, the Glow Plug gave out. How I managed to keep the little bugger running for 5.5 mins I don't know. Then after putting in a new plug for heat 2, we could not get top speed and she ran like a dog. Thanks to Tony Drabble having a play with the engine while I was marshalling, I managed to put in a good Heat 3 and qualified 4th in the C final. I still had to increase the tick over a little again though as she stalled while coming into the pits.

Had a really good final and was in second place for a few laps. Then a cock up on my part dropped me to 7th and then I managed to pull it back to 4th. Not bad considering this is only my second proper race with this type of car.

After all the frustrations on this little Hyper 21 engine I decided if I am going to take this racing lark serious again then things needed to change.

So, after some head scratching I decided to bite the Bullitt. To be absolutely correct, the Bullitt B218. After crying over spending how much, it took all of about 3/4 hour to swap out the Hyper 21 and install the Bullitt with JVD clutch. Running in is a breeze if you follow the Factory Team process of 10 tanks running very rich on the box. Just a word of warning, these instructions are not accurate for the newer batch of B218 engines as they have slightly shorter needles and hence need leaning out more than the default factory settings to run rich. Pinching the fuel line while on the starter box is a good trick to help getting it going easier. The whole process only takes an hour then you are ready lean it off properly ready to race.

OMG ... How fast is this engine. The performance in just out of this world and meant I had to spend the whole day re-learning how to drive round the track and be slower on many jumps. Our tripple is now a breeze to clear if you need or want to. I was clearing one table top by 15ft and had to back it down a little, lol. This is now going to be so much more fun. To be perfectly honest, the increase in performance and speed makes the car easier to drive as you are not pushing as hard to keep up with other drivers.

Decided to enter the NRS 12 series so hope to see you around some other tracks soon.

Update After 2 Gallon Of Nitro

Well, over the last 8 weeks or so we have had plenty of running at Deerdale Park when the weather has permitted us too (and on occasion when it did not, lol). As this is my first intro to this kind of racing I have to say the car has behaved itself nicely and been alot of fun to drive. Deerdale is a very technical astro turf track with big jumps, tight corners and plenty to unbalance a car. But it is fun learning to fly.

Once I started getting faster and more confident with the car and my abilities it became obvious that a few things needed tweaking. Firstly the kit shocks. Out of the box the car does sit and handle very well but once you start racing and pushing the car it does tend to like to grip roll way to easy. Obviously you could slow down; which is OK for bashing; but not OK for racing. The shocks seemed a little too active and therefore kicking or causing the car to hop on bigger jumps. More damping was needed. I also noticed that the standard shock towers had twisted from some of the heavier landings so these have now been replaced by the decent Aluminium hop up parts front and rear.

I decided to keep the standard kit shocks (17mm) as is and put on some proper 20mm big bore shocks. I have gone with 25wt oil all round with Blue (soft) springs on front and White (medium) on the rear. All have 6mm of loading added. This has lowered the ride height some what and meant winding in the droop screws a little to remove some of the slop. The car now jumps and lands very well indeed due to the softness and also rides the bumps well down the straight. We may need to go to thicker oil later as the warmer weather comes, but for now it works well.

I entered round 5 of the Answer RC winter series Deerdale and after some engine issues, qualified 3rd in the C to my great surprise. The excitement did not last however as we managed to throw a rear wishbone half way round the first lap. This leads to a problem I have with the rear of the car. The anti-squat top hats sit in an Aluminium plate however the seats are hollow. The only thing holding the top hats in place, other than tension and a plastic lip, is the plastic rear diff protector, and this can bend under load which allowed the wishbone pin to dislocate. In the process, the pin took a nice chunk out of the front top hat holder (now replaced with the Aluminium hop up). Trouble is, there is no alternate hop up for the rear diff protector. This really is a weak spot.

Now for the engine problems. My "Hyper 21 BRCA Edition" does seem to be a nice little engine however it does seem to like being alot leaner than the instructions recommend. It also will not idle nicely once the engine is hot like towards the end of a 6 minute race. To cure the idle problem I have had to set a high idle position and this drops a little after 6 mins of running. This would suggest its drawing air somewhere but better men than me can't find it. It may be one of the front bearings as the engine gets hot.

I would just like to thank Sloppy for helping me set the engine as me and my cousin were getting a little confused, lol.

Richard, 21, from Beeston, grew up in a two-bed house with his parents, four brothers and one sister. The family struggled to ensure they had enough money to make sure they had everything they needed, and as he grew up, Richard’s childhood ambitions began to fade.
As a child, I dreamed of becoming an electrician. But as I reached my teens, that idea began to fade and feel like I'd get nowhere because of my family’s lack of money.

I recall: “Money began to be a constant barrier. I couldn’t go on school trips because they were too expensive so I’d have to pretend to my friends that I hadn’t wanted to go in the first place. I used to lie about getting amazing Christmas and birthday presents so I could fit in with everyone else at school. The lack of money made me believe that I’d never get anywhere in life so I just learnt to accept that I’d either end up in a dead-end job or without one at all.”
Life at home sometimes got hard. My father worked long hours so he could afford to feed the family. The house was crowded and I shared a bedroom with two of my brothers which made doing homework difficult.

As a teenager I stopped dreaming about becoming an electrician and my Dad began to drill into me that any job would do, and if I didn’t like it, then tough. A little bit of money is better than no money at all. I began to accept that people like me didn’t get too far in life.
After leaving school at 16 I began working for a local mechanic and eventually got a job working in a shop before being made redundant at the height of the recession. I began to think of ways I could make my own money and it was around this time that I heard about The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme. After receiving a £2,000 loan, I set up X Nitro RC, a business selling remote control cars, boats and helicopters. As this began to grow I branched into offering service and repairs.

"The Prince’s Trust has turned my life around. I never thought I’d end up having my own business or do the things I’m able to do. I’m so grateful for the opportunities they’ve given me."

I was so grateful for getting the help to realise anything is possible I became a Young Ambassador in September 2010 - desperate to help other young people at the crossroads of their lives. I have spoken at local events to help inspire young people, interviewed prospective Trust staff, and even co-hosted the 2010 Prince's Trust Celebrate Success event. In May 2010 I attended a London debate with Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg to raise further awareness of The Trust. I have been on TV twice (which I never thought would happen) once for the Gadget Show on Channel 5, and the second was the above interview for ITV Central News.

Its so easy to sit back and think what if, when you do instead of think its amazing what life can bring. We all have the same amount of time in the day its how we use it that makes a difference. Maybe some day I'll be a self made millionaire now wouldn't that be something!

Regards,
Richard

My New Hobao Hyper 8.5 BRCA

I picked this...

Just took delivery of my new Hobao Hyper 8.5 BRCA yesterday. Great service and speedy delivery from Modelsport UK, thanks lads.

I picked this version as its non pull start and comes with a half decent starter box which means one less thing to buy. So the first job ended up being charging the gel cell and installing it in the starter box. This was subsequently mounted on a Pit Buddy ready for use.

After admiring the cars looks, cleanliness (won't last) and taking some photos (I know, I know, sad as it is) it was time to go round and check all the nuts and bolts. I was suitably impressed with the build and assembly quality specially after many years of seeing some ARTF models going down hill fast. Only a few minor loose screws to deal with.

My first and probably only real gripe was the quality of the Wheel Transmitter set supplied. It's on 27 Mhz unlike the none BRCA version of this kit which is on 2.4 Ghz. If this had been a gift etc for someone I would have been a little annoyed but as I was going to transfer it over to my DX3R, it just found its way to the nearest shelf (probably end up on eBay shortly). So, in with the new receiver (a Spektrum SR3100) and battery pack. The car takes dry cells by default and the battery box uses a JST BEC connector rather than a standard Futaba plug but nothing a cut and snip can't deal with. If you go Lipo / NiMH then you will need a Humpback pack as the Stick packs will not fit. The steering servo needed reversing but the throttle was OK as is.

OK, I have a second minor gripe. The servos supplied in most of Hobao's range seem to be good old Savox however again, unlike the non BRCA variant, this kit comes with Hobao's own servos. In reality, they do appear to be metal geared and are 9kg so will do for now. That said, my Savox 1256 and 1258 are on there way to me by Mister Pigeon.

The rest of the car appears to be well setup ready to run. Toe in with plenty of camber on the rear tyres; toe out with little camber on the front tyres; slightly softer suspension on the front and the car squats nicely under its own weight. The Hyper 21 BRCA engine does appear a little too tight out the box (and dry for that matter) and would not turn over on the starter box. Needed a little encouragement with a screw driver (don't worry, only on the fly wheel) and some 3 in 1 oil (no after run available at the time). When doing this be sure to remove plug first, open the carb fully, and place some kitchen roll down the cylinder head to catch the splatter. Running the engine over on the starter box for a few minutes starts to free things up a little. But be careful.

Tonight's tasks, should you wish to accept them, are to run the engine in with a few tanks as per the instructions. This is ALWAYS a good idea as it helps your engines last longer. All being well (and less rain) we will be ready and able to play over the weekend.

NOW THAT WE WERE HEADED INTO THE CHRISTMAS BREAK FROM WORK AND TIME TO RELAX I DECIDED THAT I WOULD SPEND MY TIME WISELY REBUILDING THE INTECH BR-5 READY FOR THE NEW YEAR, BUT AFTER 3 DAYS I WAS ALREADY BORED AND GETTING WITHDRAWL SYSTOMS FROM RACING, SO I GRABBED A LIFT FROM A MATE AND HEADED OVER TO STOKE NITRO FOR A ROUND OF THE NITRUX WINTER SERIES.
BEFORE THE MEETING I SOFTENED THE CAR RIGHT UP FROM AIR ROLE BARS TO SHOCK OILS AND DIFF OILS, MY FIRST PRACTICE OUT ON TRACK WAS BRILLIANT AND WAS AMAZED HOW MUCH STEERING I HAD NOW RUNNING PURPLE FRONT SPRINGS AND THE 2.2MM ANTI ROLE BAR.
SO WITH THIS I STUCK WITH THE SETUP FOR ROUND 1 AND QUALIFYED IN THE TOP TEN WHICH I WAS FAIRLY HAPPY WITH. INTO ROUND 2 I WAS WATCHING PREVIOUS RUNS AND NOTICED HOW THE TRACK WAS STARTING TO DRY UP, SO I THEN ADJUSTED THE KICK UP AND WENT TO MINI PINS, IN THE 2ND RUN I THEN HAD FAR TOO MUCH STEERING AND FOUND THE CAR QUITE A HANDFULL BUT STILL MADE 12TH IN ROUND, I KNEW I HAD TO IMPROVE TO TRY AND MAKE THE TOP TEN SO THEN BACK BACK TO A STIFFER FRONT ANTI ROLE BAR AND WHITE SPRINGS AND HEY PRESTO THE CAR WAS PERFECT, I MADE A COUPLE OF MISTAKES IN ROUND 3 THOUGH LEAVING ME 8TH OVERALL FOR THE GRID IN THE A-MAIN.
SO MEANWHILE I HELPED OTHER FELLOW INTECH DRIVERS IN THE LOWER FINALS AND WATCHED HOW WELL THEY WERE GETTING ON, FROM THIS I FOUND THE TRACK WAS LOSING GRIP SO RIGHT BEFORE THE FINALS I CHANGED TO ANGLES TO GET THE LOST GRIP BACK AND TRY TO MAKE A TOP 3 FINISH AS IN QUALIFYING MY FASTEST LAP WAS ONLY .2 OF A SECOND OFF THE POLE MAN.
GETTING TO THE START OF MY FINAL I HAD TROUBLE WITH THE MODULE ON MY RADIO AND COULD NOT FIND WHY IT WOULD NOT TURN ON, I THEN CHANGED TO SPEKTRUM QUICKLY TO MAKE THE GRID AND I WAS OFF, I STARTED TO MAKE MY WAY THROUGH INTO 4TH POSITION BUT WAS STRUCK BY TERRIBLE INTEREFERANCE AND ENDED UP BREAKING MY CAR 5MINUTES IN . I GUESS SOMETIMES THESE THINGS HAPPEN AND WILL LOOK INTO A NEW MODULE BUT AT LEAST I KNOW WHERE TO SET THE CAR UP FOR DAMP CONDITIONS.

AFTER THIS THE CAR WAS STILL SUPER CLEAN DUE TO RUNNING ON ASTRO AND DECIDED RATHER THAN TAKE IT APART TO REBUILD I WENT FOR A DAY TESTING UP AT THE NEW NITRO RC RACEWAY IN DROITWICH, ON FIRST ARRIVAL THE TRACK WITH SLIGHTLY PUDDLED AND VERY BOGGY MUD BUT NONE THE LESS A GOOD CHANCE FOR WET WEATHER TESTING AND TYRE TESTING READY FOR NATIONALS.
I WENT OUT ON THE SETUP I WAS RUNNING FROM STOKE AND TO MY SUPRISE THE CAR FELT VERY GOOD EVEN ON AGGRESSIVE ANGLE SPIKES. I CAN IN AND WENT BACK TO PURPLE FRONT SPRINGS AND THEN TESTED A RANGE OF LOUISE AND HOTBODIES TYRES UNTIL I FOUND A SET I WAS HAPPY WITH. 6 SETS OF TYRES LATER I FOUND A SET THAT COULD GENERATE GOOD GRIP AND NOT BLOCK UP IN THE WET MUD AND DECIDED TO CALL IT A DAY. THE CAR DID LOOK A MESS AND STILL BEING CLEANED FROM LAST WEEK  BUT WAS HAPPY TO SAY THAT IM NOT FEELING MORE CONFIDENT THAN EVER THAT 2012 WILL BE A GREAT YEAR FOR ME RUNNING THE INTECH AND WITH NEW PARTS ON THE HORIZON THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER FROM HERE ON.
SO FROM ME THANKS FOR READING AND HOPE YOU HAD A FANTASTIC NEW YEAR.
